Muscle Application – Decrease Tone
Remember the fundamentals
With the patients leg extended, place your target tissue, the tibialis posterior muscle on a stretch.
Measure your tape from the base of their foot to the proximal upper third of the tibia.
Place your anchor (approximately 1 inch) along the bottom of the foot, below the navicular bone with no tension. With the tibialis posterior muscle placed on a stretch, run the I-strip over the medial malleolus and along the medial border of the shin, utilizing about a 25% tension on the tape. Lay down the end (approximately 1 inch) with no tension.
Pain Application – Decrease Pain
Locate the point of pain.
Place the split of the Y-strip just posterior to the point of pain. Lay down the anchor with no tension .
Gently squeeze the posterior compartment towards the medial border of the shin .
With the other hand, lay down each tail of the Y-strip with 50% stretch, allowing a 1-2 inch end to be placed with no tension.
Educate the patient about the proper use of the tape.
Encourage feed back between applications to allow for any adjustments in tape tension or points of pain.
